Interlocking Planning Systems
To make simulation more efficient and implementation more cost-effective
Customers, planners, inspectors, manufacturers – a large number of people are involved in the planning of control and safety technology, and as a consequence, the planning process is subject to numerous changes. An enormous amount of unnecessary work takes place because the necessary data are kept redundantly in various different planning documents. Furthermore, a wide range of planning and engineering tools are used for the individual sections of the planning process.

The solution lies in the Interlocking Planning System by Funkwerk Information Technologies. It speeds up the planning process by standardising data keeping and thus drastically reducing the amount of work needed for data input. The system enables planners to act out during the planning phase all possible scenarios which could affect interlocking operations, e.g. scheduled construction work, based on the latest data and using the staff who will later operate the interlocking.

Advantages of the Interlocking Planning System
Non-redundant data keeping and quality assurance in the planning process
Optimised planning of track sections and stations
Creation and operational inspection of any operating interfaces and topographies
Im- and export of data, e.g. route and signal tables
Electronic interlocking data are provided for the manufacturer
Use of real timetables
Review of operational procedures
Statistical evaluations

Funkwerk IT’s planning system combines intelligent engineering with simulation. It consists of the following modules and functions:

Engineering Tool
The entire planning process can be accompanied interactively from beginning to end using the planning simulator: each planning or construction stage is verified by parallel reproduction and testing in the simulator. After editing is completed, route and signals tables etc. can be exported. The decisive advantage: the result of this planning phase is a simulation system which can be used to train controllers long before a new interlocking goes into service.

Interlocking Simulation
New interlockings have to comply with operational requirements. The planned interlocking can be put to the test by the simulator using exact topographical data and under the conditions of the real timetable. The simulation reproduces in real-time the functions of interlockings and external installations with their runtime performance and all required train and shunting trips. Test procedures can be performed either by an “automatic operator” or by a train controller. In this way the "human factor" can be integrated into the planning process to check the feasibility of the operating tasks expected from staff. The timetable data can be taken from external systems and processed in the editor when needed. Deviations from the timetable can be built in for every train and station to allow many different operational planning games.

Statistics Module
The entire simulation process can be recorded. This provides many opportunities to evaluate the simulation according to a variety of statistical criteria. In the simulation it is also possible to record and represent all train movements in a time-distance diagram. This provides a basis for conclusions about the performance of the transport system. Conclusions regarding the utilisation of track elements can be drawn from graphic evaluation of the time periods during which these were occupied by train trips, routes and flank protection.
