To make sure that the right information is in the right place at the right time Funkwerk Information Technologies has developed an operations information system which provides up-to-the-minute, comprehensive information for infrastructure operators, train operating companies, transport companies and passengers.
Funkwerk IT’s operations information system functions as a central pool for all data concerning trains, runs and routes. The system collects operational data, for example for train runs (current train positions, timetable data), train formation or routes. It analyses and links this data and transmits it to the sites where it is needed so that passengers always have accurate and full information at their disposal, train connections are correctly co-ordinated and resources (routes, traction vehicles, coaches etc.) are available at the right time and in the right quantity. Data can be exchanged with other companies and even internationally.

Increasing competition in the railway sector is placing growing pressure on railway companies to react swiftly and flexibly to market demands and provide continuous and up-to-date information about transport services for their customers. These demands can no longer be met by conventional methods of communication. What is needed is an intelligent, networked information system accessible throughout all company departments which supplies online all the information required by customers and employees and automatically draws attention to deviations from scheduled operations.

The operational information system provides a complete and up-to-date database as a basis for decisions concerning operations control. These data are now fully integrated into the operational information system which replaces the need for paper documentation and results in a considerable improvement in railway traffic safety. Only the complete computer-aided collection, administration and distribution of all data critical to the safety of railway traffic can really ensure that when irregularities occur all information is where it is needed, when it is needed.
Cost reduction by integrated communication services
A mail system integrated into the operational information system enables direct communication between two departments as well as automatic notification of several recipients. An E-Mail gateway allows problem-free exchange of data with any recipient in the intra- or internet, connection to existing office communication systems and fax machines and exchange of MS-Office documents. This integrated communications system can replace conventional communication installations such as telephone and fax completely and achieves a substantial reduction in costs.

International standardised data exchange
So that quality and service do not stop inside company boundaries, the operational information system integrates data exchange between different infrastructure operators and with train operating companies across company and national boundaries. This exchange of data is standardised throughout the UIC and makes it possible, for instance, to track trains across international borders and report their arrival and any special operational factors at the right time without the problem of language barriers.
