| Displays Based on Modules Using Electronic Ink Technology |
 |
New Perspectives for the Future Funkwerk Information Technologies is developing a new display technology for the future: modules with electronic ink for mobile and stationary information systems.
Displays with these modules combine two essential features: the optical quality of printed media with the dynamic characteristics of an electronic display. Information is presented in greater contrast than, for instance, a newspaper, and is perfectly readable from any angle, even in poor light conditions.
Display modules with electronic ink require much less power than the LCD and LED displays in common use today. There are two reasons for this: Firstly, the displays are reflective and therefore do not need backlighting, and secondly, they function in bi-stable operation mode which ensures that the displayed information remains visible even when the power supply has been shut off.
Display modules with electronic ink are also thinner, lighter, more robust and environmentally friendly than other display technologies because complex panel mountings, harmful materials and glass as a carrier material are unnecessary. The slim dimensions of the displays reduce their weight and facilitate integration of the modules into existing systems. Displays with curved surfaces can already be produced and flexible surfaces will be available in the near future.
